Girls night out is a coming of age comedy drama following two teenage girls who decide to lie to their parents to spend their first night out in Glasgow city center. They have no plan but high expectations for their night of adventure.
Director Biography - Linda Scott
I was born in Paris where I studied Filmmaking at E.S.R.A Film School, specialising in Editing.
During my studies, I directed and edited mechanically “Photo de Famille”, a short film shot in Super 16mm film.
Then, I edited several short films and a feature film available on VOD called “Callao”, directed by Tommy Weber.
I have been working as a freelance senior editor in Paris for ten years, editing entertainment TV programs for French national channels TF1 and M6 .
I moved to Glasgow in 2006 after meeting my future husband while on holidays in Scotland and a few years later, I decided to resume my studies in Filmmaking to get closer to my desire of making movies.
I have just obtained a Filmmaking Master’s degree with distinction at the University of the West of Scotland where I have had the opportunity to direct and edit a short documentary called "Side by Side", this short film "Girls Night Out" and "Veronique", a short film I co-directed with Anne Winter. I am now part of a collective of Filmmakers based in Glasgow shooting low budget independent short films.
Director Statement
What holds special meaning to me as a storyteller is to express the struggle for young women to explore their desires in a world that tries to limit their freedom. The reason I decided to tell this story is to address the problem of hyper sexualizing young women. My goal was for the audience to reminisce on the carelessness of their youth as well as to raise awareness on the danger of grooming. However, I wanted to emphasize that this is not a reason to shelter young girls and hide them so they would not tempt predators. Instead, what should focus on trying to change the way some men look at them. Despite all the improvement in women’s freedom, the idea of consent is still only used for women. Unconsciously, our society has this idea that a man is always consenting, and a woman has a more discreet and less active sexuality that needs to be preserved. This is feeding the pattern of “men have uncontrollable desires and needs” and has the consequence of boys and girls not thought as being exposed to the same dangers and risks.
I think this film is contemporary enough to interest a younger audience but also an adult one, since it passes on emotions of nostalgia for youth and the dreams of absolute freedom and risk-taking appetite that comes with it. The plot is simple enough to be understood by non-English speakers or even for people who would struggle to understand the girls’ Scottish accent. I took a lot of pleasure revisiting my adolescence with the actresses and I know that this sorority connection helped feeding their performance.
